KALEVALA CAL - PART 16. MAIDEN'S SPINDLE

This crochet square pattern is a part of a Finnish crochet project. We have designed a crochet blanket based on the Kalevala Mythology. It has been created as a tribute to Finland's 100 years of independence. The general information and links to all the square patterns of the blanket can be found in the Kalevala CAL info post at the blog of Arteeni: www.arteeni.fi/kalevalacal-en

In Kalevala, the Maidens of Pohjola sit on a rainbow circling with a spindle of gold thread.

English pattern can be found also as written lower down on the same page.

NEIDON KEHRÄ-MAIDEN’S SPINDLE

USED STITCHES:
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
dtr = double treble crochet
FPdc = front post double crochet
FPtr = front post treble crochet
BPdc = back post double crochet

*Extra double crochet stitch* Front post dc stitches are worked together with extra double crochet stitch, which takes 3 dcs, 2 trs and 2 dtrs together.  Start to crochet with colour 2 1dc, but stop when there are 2 loops on hook. Continue with colour 1, take yarn over hook, insert hook into the lowest FPdc on the right side and crochet 1FPdc, continue until there are 3 loops on hook. Yarn Over (YO) and do the same on left side and stop when there are 4 loops on hook. Draw last stitch through second st. YO twice and crochet FPtr on right sides middle FPdc-chain. Stop again when there are 4 loops left. Copy the same on left side. Pick up second loop over first stitch. There should be 4 loops on hook now. YO three times and crochet FPdtr into the top of FPdc on left side. Stop when there are 5 loops left. Do same on right side. Pick up, again, second loop over first. Place colour 2 on hook and pull through all stitches left (5).

Colours

Colour 1: magenta
Colour 2: dark grey

This piece includes intarsia crochet so that the surface FPdcs are made with colour 1 and the surface below uses yarn colour 2. If not mentioned otherwise, from second round onwards the yarn that is not in use runs under the stitches being worked as you crochet along.
TIP! For neater colour changes after FPdc: place free yarn behind the dc before starting the intarsia.
